From tvline.com:

"WHAT IS DAWN AND CHARLES’ ENDGAME HERE? (AND DO THEY AGREE ON THE ENDGAME?) | Gale Harold, who plays Charles with delicious zeal, was not at liberty to reveal their master plan. “But I would love to see it be kind of, as it should be, let out bit by bit, but veiled, so it builds up to a question,” he offered. “You have this whole thriller aspect of, ‘Who’s going to unwind the other one?’ Because it’s inevitable that there’s going to be some sort of power struggle between them.”"

Many thanks to redeyechicago.com we have this wonderful new interview with Gale:

"Gale Harold is no stranger to playing bad boys. His sexy Brian Kinney in "Queer as Folk" was the resident love-'em-and-leave-'em heartbreaker for five seasons.

But Charles Meade, the wicked witch of Chance Harbor he plays in CW's "The Secret Circle," is on a totally different level.

“He may be up in the bad scale a bit,” Harold said Monday during a phone interview prior to the show’s third episode, “Loner,” airing at 8 p.m. Sept. 29."

We guess that hug in last week's episode didn't count? OK, then! We chatted with Shelley Hennig who says we'll see pretty soon what the relationship between Diana and her father (Gale Harold) is like. "From what I've seen, they do have a really good relationship and they actually are very verbal with each other about the loss of her mother. I'd say they have a pretty close relationship but both of us are hiding secrets from each other.""

Nick (Louis Hunter) is thrown for a loop when Melissa (Jessica Parker Kennedy) adopts a new attitude and enlists his help to track down her family's Book of Shadows. Faye (Phoebe Tonkin) is also recruited but isn’t happy about being the third wheel. Meanwhile, Diana (Shelley Hennig) is craving some alone time with Adam (Thomas Dekker) and arranges a date night so they can rekindle the spark in their relationship, but all six of them are brought together to fight off a dark force that threatens to destroy the Circle from within. Completely unaware of the new danger encroaching on their children, Dawn (Natasha Henstridge) joins Charles (Gale Harold) aboard his boat to further their plans for the Circle, but is surprised to find that Charles may have more than business on his mind. Liz Friedlander directed the episode written by Dana Baratta (#105)."

Fresh scoop from Gale on Charles, from tvline.com:

"The Secret Circle | You want Gale Harold, I got Gale Harold! And I hit him with two burning questions I had coming out of the CW series’ premiere. No.1: What the heck happened 16 years ago in Chance Harbor? “Well, there’s the real version,” he started, “and then there’s Charles’ version, and then there’s Dawn’s version, and then there’s what the kids know or have heard.” In other words, the show will take its time to reveal The Incident (as I like to call it), and change up the context as it goes along. But rest assured, it was a cataclysmic event. “I have probably created some [version of the truth] to justify it to myself because it was bad, it was really bad,” Harold notes, “and it is human nature to make excuses.” Question No. 2: Why not just kill Adam’s chatty drunk of a dad? Did someone run out of kitchen matches…? For starters, Harold reckons, “I can go out of town and take somebody out, but if I do it next door, it might make things too complicated.” Plus, Harold likes having fellow Queer As Folk alum Adam Harrington around as a sparring partner. “The anger and the heartache and the jealousy that Ethan has wrapped up in all of this is going to put his son in a very difficult situation.”"

From smallscreenscoop.com's recap of the TSC Pilot:

"Charles Meade (Gale Harold), Diana’s father, and a warlock, always seems to be watching Cassie and up to no good. We appear to have our “villain”. I loved him in Queer As Folk so I can’t wait to see what he brings to this series! I’m glad to see him back on my TV screen. I love his uber creepy demeanor – he’s got this role nailed! More from Kevin Williamson on wetpaint.com:

"“Natasha Henstridge is amazing,” he gushed at the 2011 TCA Summer Press Tour.

“She's the mother, and the principal in the pilot,” Kevin continued. “But in the second episode... Gale Harold (Charles Meade) ain't got nothing on her.”

Did you hear that, Mr. Harold? Sounds like your boss is throwing down the gauntlet! We know the heights of villainy both the TSC adult leads are capable of, and we can't wait to see just how nasty they get this season."

(This is mostly quoting from the E! interview (HERE) but it's still great to see him getting so much coverage!)

"Call us crazy, but we kind of have a crush on Charles Meade (Gale Harold). We know, we know –– he killed Cassie’s (Britt Robertson) mom and half-drowned Ethan (Adam Harrington) in water-vomit, but he’s just so charming and suave! Just ask Principle Chamberlain (Natasha Henstridge), she was swooning all over herself when Charles showed up on her doorstep. What’s the deal with these two and why are they so evil yet so good looking?"

And another great review from popwatch.ew.com:

"I’m in for The Secret Circle, largely because of Gale Harold (pictured). He plays Charles, the father of one of the teens who make up the secret circle of witches. I love that the show opened with him setting a fire that killed the mother of the main character, Cassie (Britt Robertson). He needed Cassie, now orphaned, to move to Chance Harbor, Wash. to live with her grandmother so she could meet the five classmates who’d tell her she’s a witch and completes their circle. They all lost at least one parent 16 years ago when something happened to their circle. What are Charles and Dawn (Natasha Henstridge), the high school principal who’s also a parent of a circle member, plotting? Williamson likes to introduce characters as one thing and have them evolve into something else. So Charles, while first appearing deliciously evil, can’t be all bad, can he?"

Following last night's highly-anticipated premiere of The Secret Circle, reviews and recaps of the show are coming in thick and fast and one thing is for sure - people are already falling under Charles' spell! The reaction to Gale's performance in the Pilot has been wonderful, unsurprisingly, and here are just a few of the comments about him so far:

"Cut to the same mysterious car pulling up in front of Cassie’s house. Out of the car comes a man that from this day forward I will fondly call “Tall, Dark, and Scary” (portrayed by Gale Harold, Queer as Folk) aka – as we later learn – Charles Meade. Mr. Meade, I mean TDS, has possibly one of the most memorable TV entrances ever as he proceeds to cause Cassie’s house to go up in flames by lighting a few matches. I should mention that these matches never touch the house but as each one is lit, another rope of fire spreads across Cassie’s home, engulfing it in an enormous inferno, with Cassie’s mom still inside, helpless."

The Secret Circle Season Premiere Recap 9/15/11

...

"My favorite character on the show so far, played by Gale Harold, is Charles Meade. He’s got serious swagger; you can tell he’s King **** around town. He’s hot, he’s charming and he’s secretly evil, which is the best kind of evil."

The Secret Circle. Charles in Charge.

...

"Then the casting started, and Britt Robertson, who I've adored since the pilot of Life Unexpected, signed up. And she was joined by more and more people I was excited about, like Gale Harold and Thomas Dekker.

Praise also has to go to the cast, both older and younger. It is nice to see some intriguing adult characters - Ethan, Charles and Dawn are all people I want to see more of. And it's fun that Charles and Dawn, at least, are the villains - teens always want to fight against adults, so it's good, solid wish-fulfilment stuff (once the characters inevitably realise what's going on, of course)."

'The Secret Circle': First impressions

...

"What was your favorite scene from the premiere?

Eric: Everything with Gale Harold as Charles. What a creepy, perfect villain."

More on last night's ratings, from thefutoncritic.com:

"[via press release from The CW]

"The Secret Circle" Matches The CW's All-Time High in the Time Period in W18-34

Witches and vamps make a magical combination Thursday night on The CW...

The series premiere of THE SECRET CIRCLE averaged a 1.9/5 in its target demo of W18-34, matching the network's all time high in the Thursday 9-10pm time period. THE SECRET CIRCLE averaged a 2.0/7 in female teens, the best in that demo since 3/15/07 in the time period.

...

Perfectly paired with The CW's hit THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, THE SECRET CIRCLE retained 100% of its lead-in with total viewers (3.0M), 93% in A18-49 (1.3/3), 94% in W18-49 (1.7/4), 86% in W18-34 (1.9/5) and built by 11% in female teens (2.0/7)"

Ratings for the TSC premiere, thanks to insidetv.ew.com and thanks to @secret_circle for the heads up:

"The Secret Circle (3 million, 1.3) retained nearly all of its lead in from the network’s top-rated show. VD was down a pretty standard annual dip of 13 percent from last year’s debut. Secret Circle was down a tenth from Nikita‘s debut in the slot last year in the adult demo, but tied Nikita in the network’s 18-34 target demo (and with its stronger lead-in, the witchcraft drama managed to pull a higher number than Ringer‘s premiere on Tuesday)."

From Carina MacKenzie (@cadlymack):

"We've loved Gale Harold's work for years, and saw occasional glimpses of his darker side as Brian on "Queer as Folk" -- but as Charles, he instantly gave us the chills. The deliberate, calculated nature of the murder in the first scene, particularly given the fact that he obviously knew Amelia, was terrifying.

The best scene in the pilot was easily his drowning scene with Ethan - the juxtaposition of power and weakness was stirring."

From insidetv.ew.com:

"The parents (Queer as Folk‘s Gale Harold and Natasha Henstridge) aren’t your usual CW parents: As we quickly see in the premiere, two of the circle members have parents that have a mysterious, deadly serious agenda of their own. ”This is how I want to see this man,” Williamson says of Harold. ”I want to see him be devilish and delicious again. All the writers are very excited about the possibilities of what they can do with him. Everyone in the writers room was like, ‘Remember Queer as Folk when he did this, and when he did that?’ We’re gonna try to revisit his bad side, but at the time same time make it a complicated character so that we have a reason to love watching him."

"What the witless kids don’t realize: They are being manipulated by Diana’s father Charles (Harold), the very one who murdered Cassie’s mother, and Faye’s mother Dawn (Natasha Henstridge, “Species”), who hope to take advantage of unleashing their children’s powers.

Another wonderful review for Gale in TSC from Mikey O'Connell (@Mikeylikestv) on blog.zap2it.com:

"The real foil here is the elderly set of local witches, who also happen to be one of the one of the show's biggest selling points -- "Queer a Folk" vet Gale Harold, in particular. From his first moment on screen, starting the fire that pushes Cassie's mother out of the picture and her into his yet-to-be-revealed plot, he's the perfect villain."

And here we have the wonderful new interview from Jim Halterman (@JimHalterman)!

"The series is much more than just teenagers, however, as we see in the opening minutes of the pilot when Charles Meade (Gale Harold) starts the ball rolling with a book of matches that, well, gets things ablaze very fast. But is Charles truly a villain? Is he just taking orders from high school principal/apparent ringleader Dawn Chamberlin (Natasha Henstridge)? What exactly is their agenda and how does young Cassie fit into it? Our Jim Halterman figured the best way to get some answers is to sit down with Gale Harold, as he did at the recent Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills."

Interview: "The Secret Circle" Co-Star Gale Harold

Thanks to tvline.com:

"Charles Meade

(Played by Gale Harold, Queer as Folk)

Diana's father makes one of the best entrances in recent TV history when he slowly approaches the house Cassie's mom is in and uses but a few matches to turn it into a raging inferno -- effectively setting in motion a series of events that will bring new power to not just the Chance Harbor teens, but apparently Charles and Dawn as well. "Our circle is gone," Harold notes. "So it will be interesting to see how they are planning on using their children to sort of reanimate all that."

Harold's fervent wish for Charles moving forward, after arriving in such epic style? "I'm hoping that he goes so dark that to cover his tracks he has to be even more charming. That would be the fun part, to do some really, really horrible things.""

"The CW had their Fall 2011 launch party tonight which was sponsored by Bing. KSiteTV was in attendance, and we were able to get quotes about several of the network's shows, including Nikita, Ringer, and The Secret Circle.

On top of several tables was this Secret Circle promo card featuring an image of the cast that we haven't seen yet."

Yet another rave review for Gale's performance as Charles in the TSC pilot in this new article on E!online, thanks to @tbrick2!

"Harold steals the pilot as Diana's father Charles, the man who does very bad things to Cassie's mother (oh snap!) in the opening scenes. Menacing, charismatic, cruel and focused, you can tell Harold is having a blast playing the guy you love to hate."

Gale appears in AolTV.com's "Photos of The CW's Hottest Guys."

"Gale Harold, 'The Secret Circle'

Maybe it's because Harold is an enigma himself, but as Charles Meade, the inscrutable lawyer with a nefarious plan for the town's witchy teenagers, he's evilly irresistible.

'The Secret Circle' Season 1 premieres Thu., Sept. 15, 9PM ET"

Unfortunately Gale has had to pull out of his scheduled appearance at the "Windows On The World" reading that is due to take place on Monday 12th September.

Thanks to Evangelium8 on IMDb for the update:

"I've been in touch w/the Blank Theater and he's definitely pulled out because of a scheduling conflict."

This new interview with Adam Harrington on wetpaint.com mentions Gale quite a few times:

"Harrington portrays Ethan Conant, the father of Thomas Dekker’s character, Adam, and it becomes very clear early on that he’s being tormented by Gale Harold’s Charles Meade (who sets the main character’s mother on fire within the first few minutes of the show — such a sweetheart). Like Harrington says, this is not fun, shiny witchcraft — and you’re gonna love it!"

...

"That's a massive thing, to not know what happened to make you the character that you are.

I mean, Gale and I definitely figured out that our relationship in the past was probably somewhat better than it is now, and that whatever happened was bad. And when you know that, you've got animosity to play off of each other. As far as what happened, it actually kind of gives you a bit of freedom. In a way, it's like a bad memory, you want to stay away from it a bit because it's so bad. With Ethan, anyway, you just look for the nearest bottle."

Danielle Turchiano (@danielletbd) posted her advance review of TSC on examiner.com and she gives a wonderful review of Gale's performance as Charles!

"Harold is the epitome of one such dynamic, a natural born lead, and the perfect villain for this tale: dark, sulky, and somewhat greasy-haired. He is secretive and as a man of few words, stoic, but he bears down and commits in a way that makes you unable to look away. His presence looms over every scene, even the ones in which he is not in, because the performance is just that memorable."

Gale was not at the Paley event last night, but Adam Harrington was and he makes a mention of Gale and hints at what is in store for their respective characters in TSC in this new interview:

""I think the cool journey for Ethan is-- when something traumatic happens, can he find his way back? How does that look? Especially because he loves his son dearly, and that may be a motivating factor."

But his son is dabbling in witchcraft-- witchcraft which was supposed to be abolished in the town; witchcraft which is ultimately responsible for the death of a woman who should have been with Ethan (if you believe the whole "written in the stars" thing). It's going to be a lot for Ethan to deal with, even without coming to blows with Charles (Gale Harold), which Harrington teased will be "coming," too."

Many thanks to Carina MacKenzie (@cadlymack) we have two beautiful new promo shots of Gale in TSC!

And an intriguing comment about Charles from Natasha:

"Henstridge hints that though Charles may have a romantic interest in Dawn, Dawn is more interested in how Charles can help her regain what was lost years ago.

"There are things Charles alludes to, and certain desires expressed," she says. "I'm not sure how important that is to Dawn, or if the overall big picture is going to take priority. There are definitely hints and things happening, but I'm not quite sure where it's going to go yet.""

Gale's comments in the TV Guide interview:

"I play a father, upstanding member of society, but preoccupied and basically obsessed with building some sort of power base that he can use for other things that'd probably be shut down by the authorities and society at large if they knew what he was doing."

This new article on tvfanatic.com makes a mention of Gale:

"Referring to the young coven - which will include Britt Robertson's Cassie, who moves to a new town after her mother is killed - versus an older generation that is comprised of Natasha Henstridge's Dawn and Gale Harold's Charles, Williamson teased:

"There is this idea of what happened 16 years ago, that chased Cassie’s mother from this town. What was so horrific? As our new Circle tries to uncover that, for fear of their own future, a lot of those discoveries do go inter-generational. We have the Dawn and Charles Circle, but we also have Jane, who is Cassie’s grandmother, who has her own Circle..."

Kevin Williamson Previews Inter-Generational War on The Secret Circle

...

The original source for the quotes in the article is this interview with Kevin Williamson on collider.com:

"WILLIAMSON: Yeah. There is this idea of what happened 16 years ago, that chased Cassie’s mother from this town. What was so horrific? As our new Circle tries to uncover that, for fear of their own future, a lot of those discoveries do go inter-generational. We have the Dawn and Charles Circle, but we also have Jane, who is Cassie’s grandmother, who has her own Circle. So, there is this generational aspect, if you look at the hidden mythology. It’s a world of villainy, where you may not like what they are doing or agree with the villains, but if we do our job right, you will understand them and understand why they are doing what they are doing. Hopefully, it will resonate in an emotional way, along with the thrills and fun."

A nice mention of Gale in this article to accompany the new promo shots on zap2it.com:

"One of my favorite characters in The Secret Circle is Charles Meade, played by the always awesome Gale Harold. Harold comes off as creepy and menacing in the title, while also being incredibly blasι about his strong witchcraft abilities. In other words, it's a treat to watch him scheme and threaten his way across your television screen."
